• Have you ever felt like your own thoughts were your biggest opponent?

Whether it’s on the tennis court or in the job hunt, I’ve been there, and it’s true, mindset is everything.

Back in high school, during tennis matches, I realized something crucial. Singles matches were tough for me; I’d get down on myself after a few bad plays, and it was all downhill from there. But doubles? That was a different story. Working with a teammate helped me stay positive and focused, and it showed in our results.

Reading “The Inner Game of Tennis” helped me understand how much my mindset can affect my results. The book talks about silencing your inner critic and just playing the game. It’s something I think about a lot, especially when helping job seekers. Keeping a positive attitude and learning to shake off the setbacks can truly turn things around.

If you’re hitting a rough patch in your job search, try to think like a doubles player. Keep your head up, think about what you would say to your partner, and then say that to yourself, and push forward. You might be surprised by how much of a difference it can make.
