Ever caught yourself or others overusing the phrase “I don’t know” at work?
Words have power, especially in the workplace.
Frequent use of “I don’t know” can subtly chip away at our confidence
And portray a less proactive impression.
Here is how to demonstrate initiative and drive with alternatives to “I don’t know”
1. “Let me find that out for you.”
↳ Emphasizes your willingness to assist.
2. “I’ll check on that and get right back to you.”
↳ Shows commitment and follow-through.
3. “That’s a great question; I’ll confirm the details.”
↳ Values the inquiry and your role in clarifying it.
4. “I have a colleague who might have the answer, let me ask them.”
↳ Highlights teamwork and resourcefulness.
5. “I’m not certain, but I will investigate and learn more about it.”
↳ Reflects a growth mindset.
6. “I can provide more information once I’ve reviewed the relevant resources.”
↳ Shows diligence and attention to detail.
7. “I don’t have that information right now, but I know where I can obtain it.”
↳ Indicates know-how and efficiency.
8. “That hasn’t come up before; let’s explore it together.”
↳ Encourages collaboration and collective problem-solving.
Switching out “I don’t know” for one of these alternatives can change a conversation.
It also elevates your professional image.
But how do we make this switch a habit?
Start with awareness.
Enlist a friend or colleague to gently point out when you fall back on “I don’t know,”
Nudging you to choose a more proactive phrase instead.
The best part?
This approach not only reflects well on you
It also fosters a positive, can-do atmosphere within your team.

Exploring the unknown together is always better.
When I worked at Apple, they had a culture of – I don’t know, let’s find out together.
